The term ayurveda literally refers to an ancient
Indian system of health care. The word ayurveda is actually a compound of two words “ayush” and “Veda”.
The word “ayus” means life or life principle and “veda” refers to knowledge. So the term ayurveda
means “knowledge of Life. According to ancient Indian scripts on ayurveda like “ayurvedaratna” the origin
of Ayurveda is stated to be a divine revelation of Lord Bramha. The major Indian books on the ancient science of ayurveda
are “Charak samhita” and “Sushruta Samhita”. From the twentieth century onwards all the physicians
practicing the ancient medical system of ayurveda have organized themselves into professional organizations and ayurveda has
now got a global recognition as an ancient healing art.
